The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (Department of Consumer Affairs) issued Notification G.S.R. 536(E) on August 7, 2025, in exercise of powers conferred by sub-section (1) read with clauses (c), (f), (h), (i) and (s) of sub-section (2) of section 52 of the Legal Metrology Act 2009 (1 of 2010). This notification introduces the Legal Metrology (General) Fifth Amendment Rules, 2025, which further amend the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011. These new rules come into force on their publication date in the Official Gazette. Specifically, within the EIGHTH SCHEDULE, PART VI, PART C of the 2011 Rules, paragraph 3 is substituted with new provisions defining a complete thermometer as a temperature probe connected to an indicating unit, detailing two types of instruments: an interchangeable probe with a compatible indicating unit, or a permanently connected probe and indicating unit. Furthermore, in paragraph 5, sub-paragraph (1), clause (i), the temperature range 'maintained at a temperature range of 36.9°C to 37.1°C' is replaced with 'at 37°C± 1 °C', and in Note (2), '5(2)(7)” is replaced with “5(2)(i)”. Short title and commencement.- (1) These rules shall be called the Legal Metrology (General) Fifth Amendment Rules, 2025. (2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. 2. In the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, in the EIGHTH SCHEDULE, in PART VI, in PART C, - (i) for paragraph 3, the following shall be substituted, namely: - "(1) A complete thermometer consists of a temperature probe connected to any indicating unit. (2) The instrument shall be of one of the following types:- (i) an interchangeable temperature probe connected to an indicating unit that is compatible with the characteristic response of the probe; or (ii) a temperature probe and an indicating unit permanently connected."; (ii) in paragraph 5, in sub-paragraph (1), in clause (i),- (a) for the words, figures and letters "maintained at a temperature range of 36.9°C to 37.1°C", the words, figures and letters "at 37°C± 1 °C" shall be substituted; (b) in Note (2), for the figures and brackets "5(2)(7)”, the figures and brackets “5(2)(i)” shall be substituted.
