Core Purpose

The Central Government amends notification S.O. 4165(E) dated 28th July, 2026, concerning sugar stock limits under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025.

Detailed Summary

This Order, S.O. 4907(E), issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (Department of Food and Public Distribution) on September 3, 2026, amends its previous notification S.O. 4165(E) dated July 28, 2026. Exercising powers conferred by section 3 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 (10 of 1955) read with clauses 7 and 16 of the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025, the Central Government modifies paragraph 1 of the said notification. Specifically, the phrase "in excess of 4000 quintals" is substituted with "in excess of 2000 quintals, except in case of Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas, where the stock shall not exceed 4000 quintals." An explanation is also inserted, defining "Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas" as the areas specified in the schedule to the Government of West Bengal's notification No. 7752/FS/F.5/14R92/61, dated December 16, 1964. This order shall come into force on September 15, 2026.
