The Ministry of Earth Sciences issued Notification S.O. 3508(E) dated 7th August 2023, in exercise of powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 23 of the Indian Antarctic Act, 2022 (13 of 2022), establishing a Committee on Antarctic Governance and Environmental Protection with the following members: Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (Chairperson, ex officio); Additional Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs (ex officio); Additional Secretary, Ministry of Tourism (ex officio); Joint Secretary (United Nations Economic and Social Division), Ministry of External Affairs (ex officio); Joint Secretary (Marine Fisheries), Department of Fisheries (ex officio); Joint Secretary (Maritime Security, Indo-Pacific), National Security Council Secretariat (ex officio); Joint Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (ex officio); Director (Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences) and Scientist 'G', Defence Research and Development Organisation, Ministry of Defence (ex officio); Director, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa, Ministry of Earth Sciences (ex officio); Director (Maritime Administration/Shipping), Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (ex officio); Associate Director (National Remote Sensing Centre), Department of Space (ex officio); Dr. Rasik Ravindra, former Director, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa-403804, resident at 608 Lalleshwari Apartment, Sector 21D, Faridabad-121002 (expert member); Dr. Bimal Patel, Vice Chancellor, Rashtriya Raksha University, Lavad-Dahegam, Gandhinagar-382305 (expert member); Dr. V.N. Sanjeevan, former Director, Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology, Kochi, resident at Ernakulam-682025 (expert member); and Programme Head, Polar Science Programme, Ministry of Earth Sciences (Member Secretary, ex officio). The three expert members (serial nos. 12, 13 and 14) shall hold office for a term of three years from the date of assuming charge, and are entitled to receive Rs. 6,000 per day as daily allowance for attending Committee meetings, plus travelling allowance admissible to a Joint Secretary to the Government of India.
