The Ministry of External Affairs, through Notification G.S.R. 902(E) issued on December 16, 2025, extends the application of the Customs Act, 1962 (52 of 1962) and the Customs Tariff Act, 1975 (51 of 1975) to the continental shelf of India and the exclusive economic zone of India. This extension, effective from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette (December 17, 2025), is enacted under the powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-section (6) of section 6 and clause (a) of sub-section (7) of section 7 of the Territorial Waters, Continental Shelf, Exclusive Economic Zone and other Maritime Zones Act, 1976 (80 of 1976). The primary purpose is to facilitate the reconnaissance, exploration, or production of minerals under operating rights granted by the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act, 2002 (17 of 2003) within these maritime zones, and to regulate the supply of any goods connected with these specified activities.
