The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (Department of Social Justice and Empowerment) issued Notification S.O. 1818(E) on April 9, 2026, extending the tenure of the Commission of Inquiry. The Commission was originally constituted on 6th October, 2022, by notification S.O. 4742(E) dated 6th October, 2022, under section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952 (60 of 1952), to examine the matter of according Scheduled Caste status to persons who converted to religions other than those mentioned in Presidential Orders under article 341 of the Constitution. Initially, the Commission was required to submit its report by 10th October, 2024. Its tenure was first extended for one year, from 11th October, 2024 to 10th October, 2025, via notification S.O. 4780(E) dated 30th October, 2024. A second extension for six months, from 11th October, 2025 to 10th April, 2026, was granted through notification S.O. 5000(E) dated 4th November, 2025. Following a request from the Commission for further time to finalise its report and recommendations, the Central Government has now extended its tenure for an additional two months, effective from 11th April, 2026 to 10th June, 2026. L.-33004/99 The Gazette of India CG-DL-E-10042026-271693 EXTRAORDINARY PART II-Section 3-Sub-section (ii) PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY No. 1750] NEW DELHI, THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 2026/CHAITRA 19, 1948 MINISTRY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EMPOWERMENT (Department of Social Justice and Empowerment) NOTIFICATION New Delhi, the 9th April, 2026 S.O. 1818(E). - Whereas, the Commission of Inquiry (hereinafter referred to as the Commission) was constituted on 6th October, 2022 vide notification number S.O. 4742(E) dated the 6th October, 2022 under section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952 (60 of 1952), to examine the matter of according Scheduled Caste status to new persons, who claim to historically have belonged to Scheduled Castes but have converted to religion other than those mentioned in the Presidential Orders issued from time to time under article 341 of the Constitution, and matters related thereto; And whereas, the Commission was required to submit its report and recommendations on or before the 10th October, 2024; And whereas, on the request of the Commission, its tenure was extended for a period of one year with effect from the 11th October, 2024 to 10th October, 2025 vide notification number S.O. 4780 (E) dated the 30th October, 2024; And whereas, on the request of the Commission, its tenure was further extended for a period of six months with effect from the 11th October, 2025 to 10th April, 2026 vide notification number S.O. 5000 (E) dated the 4th November, 2025; And whereas, the Commission has requested for further time for finalising its report and recommendations; Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952 (60 of 1952), the Central Government hereby extend the tenure of the Commission for a period of two months with effect from the 11th April, 2026 to 10th June, 2026. 2.
