Core Purpose

The Chief Justice of India amends the Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961, by substituting Rule 4A.

Detailed Summary

The Supreme Court of India, through Notification G.S.R. 447(E) dated 3rd July, 2025, has exercised powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 146 of the Constitution to amend the Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961. The amendment substitutes the existing Rule 4A with a new provision. The revised Rule 4A mandates that reservation in direct recruitment for posts specified in the Schedule, covering candidates from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Physically Challenged, Ex-servicemen, and dependants of Freedom Fighters, shall conform to the Rules, orders, and Notifications issued periodically by the Government of India. This policy applies to posts with pay scales corresponding to those prescribed in the Schedule, with the Chief Justice retaining the authority to specify modifications, variations, or exceptions from time to time. The notification was issued by T.I. Rajput, Registrar (Recruitment), and published in the Gazette of India on July 4, 2025.
