The Ministry of Home Affairs, via Notification S.O. 3674(E) dated August 12, 2025, in New Delhi, announced a directive from the President of India. In pursuance of clause (1) of Article 239 of the Constitution, the President has directed that the Administrator of the Union territory of Chandigarh shall, subject to the control of the President and until further orders, exercise the powers and discharge the functions of the State Government. These powers and functions are to be exercised specifically under the Prisons Act, 1894 (9 of 1894), and are applicable within the Union territory of Chandigarh.
