Dated 5 April 2024 (S.O. 1630(E)), the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded that four factions of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League (JKPL) - JKPL (Mukhtar Ahmed Waza), JKPL (Bashir Ahmad Tota), JKPL (Ghulam Mohammad Khan @Sopori), also known as Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Political League, and JKPL (Aziz Sheikh) led by Yaqoob Sheikh - had been declared unlawful associations vide notification S.O. 1415(E) dated 15 March 2024, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii). In exercise of powers under Section 5(1) read with Section 4(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967), the Central Government constituted the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, consisting of Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to adjudicate whether sufficient cause exists for declaring the four JKPL factions as unlawful associations.
