One method of training operators to manage flaps while training is to have the student sit at the yoke or stick while another pilot on board manages the flaps. This method is not typically ideal, because the student needs to develop a feel for how the airplane responds to flap changes and also needs to be free to concentrate on other aspects of flying the airplane.
Another method is to use a training simulator to teach flap management. Simulators can be used to develop the necessary skills required for flap management and coordination.
When training a student to use flaps, the instructor should introduce the use of flaps for takeoff and landing, and the student must learn to adjust them as necessary during both phases of flight. In the landing phase, the student needs to develop a feel for how the airplane will descend and its speed as the flaps are lowered.
Takeoffs and Landings
Pilots use flaps during takeoff and landing to allow the aircraft to travel at a slower speed or to descend at a steeper angle without increasing the speed. This gives them more flexibility in their approach and landing. Takeoff flaps usually improve the takeoff performance by generating additional lift, which allows the aircraft to lift off at a lower speed. The pilot should slowly release the flaps as the aircraft gains speed.

Flap Types
Flaps are often mounted on hinges on the trailing edge of an aircraft wing. There are several different types of flaps, but the most common types are plain flaps, split flaps, slotted flaps, and Fowler flaps.
Plain flaps are the simplest type of flap. They are just a hinged section of the wing that extends downward.
Split flaps are similar to plain flaps, but they are split into two sections. The upper section is hinged to the wing and the lower section is hinged to the upper section. This allows the lower section to extend further down than a plain flap, which generates more lift.
Slotted flaps have a gap between the flap and the wing when extended. This gap allows air to flow over the top surface of the flap, which helps to keep the airflow attached and prevent separation. This generates more lift than a split flap.
Fowler flaps are the most complex type of flap. They are hinged to the wing and extend downward and backward. This increases the wing area as well as the camber, which generates the most lift of all the flap types.
Flap Settings
