Core Purpose

The Central Government, through the Ministry of Jal Shakti, extends the period for the Ravi and Beas Waters Tribunal to submit its further report until August 5, 2026, by amending its Notification S.O. 905(E) dated August 5, 2003.

Detailed Summary

The Ministry of Jal Shakti (Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation) issued Notification S.O. 3056(E) on July 9, 2025, to further extend the period for the Ravi and Beas Waters Tribunal to forward its report. Exercising powers under the proviso to sub-section (3) of section 5 of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956 (33 of 1956), the Central Government has extended the deadline from August 5, 2025, to August 5, 2026. This extension is made in view of the exigencies of the work involved, as indicated by the Tribunal. The amendment specifically modifies Notification S.O. 905(E), dated August 5, 2003, issued by the erstwhile Ministry of Water Resources, by substituting "till the 5th day of August, 2025" with "till the 5th day of August, 2026" in its last paragraph. The Ravi and Beas Waters Tribunal was originally constituted under sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 14 of the same Act via Notification S.O. 169(E) dated April 2, 1986, to adjudicate matters of the Punjab Settlement, and had previously forwarded its initial report on January 30, 1987, with further references made on August 19, 1987.
