By Notification No. 22-Pres/2024 dated 30 March 2024, published in the Gazette of India (Part I, Section 1, No. 87) on 30 March 2024, the President's Secretariat announced that the President of India was pleased to confer the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, posthumously on four persons: Shri P. V. Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister of India; Chaudhary Charan Singh, former Prime Minister of India; Dr. Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, agricultural scientist; and Shri Karpoori Thakur, former Chief Minister of Bihar.
