The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, through Notification S.O. 860(E) dated February 17, 2026, exercised powers conferred by section 3 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 (10 of 1955) read with paragraph 6 of the Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Regulation of Supply and Distribution and Prevention of Malpractices), Order, 2005. This notification supersedes the Government of India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas notification S.O. number 2133 (E), dated the 2nd June, 2021, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary Part-II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii), except for actions done or omitted before the supersession. The Central Government directs oil companies to sell Ethanol Blended Motor Spirit with an ethanol percentage of up to twenty per cent, adhering to Bureau of Indian Standards specifications and having a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95, across all States and Union territories. A proviso allows the Central Government, in special circumstances, to permit oil companies to sell Ethanol Blended Petrol meeting Bureau of Indian Standards RON specifications for specified periods and regions.
